Ricardo Amaru, MD, is a Professor in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Chair, and serves as Director of Cell Biology Unit, Functional Sciences Department at School of Medicine in Mayor de San Andres University. He is also member of Bolivian National Academy of Sciences as well as Bolivian Academy of Medicine. After attending San Andres University Medical School, Dr. Amaru completed a fellowship in Hematology at the Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo, Italy, where he was part of the first allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cells transplantations in acute leukemias (Leukemia 1996;10:860-865). He was also part of a research team concerned with gene cloning ZFM Isoform B4 (NCBI: L49380) and ZFM Isoform B3 (NCBI: L49345). Then, he was elected to lead a new research team that cloned a genomic upstream TAL1 gene (NCBI: AF415167) and New rearranged SIL gene (NCBI: AF415166), this allowed him to become established as a researcher in molecular biology. Dr. Amaru’s research focuses on defining a molecular basis for high altitude pathological erythrocytosis and his interest is in identifying the molecular basis involved in the adaptation to high altitude in Andean Aymara.
